Last month at Interop, thousands of IT professionals gathered in Las Vegas to discuss the future of the technology industry. In keynote after keynote, one theme ran prevalent. Wim Elfrink, executive vice president & chief globalization officer at Cisco, said it best: “We are quickly moving from a web-based to an apps-based world.”
In the early days of the Internet, very few companies had websites, or even thought them necessary. Now everyone knows better. The same thing is happening with mobile apps. Potential (and repeating) customers are more likely to regularly use a company’s mobile app than visit their website.
Here are some facts that were presented in Wim’s keynote speech:
- People now spend more time on mobile devices than on laptops & desktop computers.
- In 2020, there will be an estimated 50 billion devices connected to the Internet.
- The Internet of Everything has become a $19 trillion dollar opportunity arena.
What does this mean for the majority of businesses? Basically, a well-designed mobile app that integrates with a company’s website is a necessity. Also, an application centric infrastructure will be vital in order for any organization to handle increasing customer demands in the future.
To end with another great quote from Cisco’s Elfrink:
“The fourth phase of the internet is coming. You’d better fasten your seatbelt.”
